Expat Life, Day 57: Exploring Hotel Droog
I’ve been in Amsterdam for two months so far, but I’ve already have three visitors from the US– lucky me & my well traveled friends!
It’s really interesting how each person chooses to see the city, and in turn, what the city has to offer. I’ve had a friend come for beer, another for the scenery and the very legal activities, and lastly, one for design shops and music.
Elan came to Amsterdam after being in Copenhagen where he discovered Hay so by the time, he ended up here, he was on a mission to check out as much design and concept shops here before heading off to Berlin. In case you were wondering, he went from London to Copenhagen to Istanbul to here (thanks for squeezing me in) to Berlin– ballleerrr!
He introduced me to Hay & Friday Next, which made my eyes fall out of my head, and money flow out of my pockets without me even touching my wallet, so I decided to add to the fun.
I discovered Hotel Droog through a Pinterest board with all the best design shops of Amsterdam. This was the first time I actually went to a place I found on Pinterest so really enjoyed using this site where I usually mindlessly pin things now and never look back at later.
Droog “Hotel” (in quotes because this hotel only has one room) is like an adult design version of Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory with all its whimsy, funk, delight and wonder.
First of all, there’s this mystical, fantastical garden.
and a gallery with this sound installation, which was a leftover remnant of ADE the weekend before.
In addition to everything you saw above, there’s a cafe, a beauty salon, and so much more I probably missed out on.
Do you get the whole adult design version of Willy Wonka chocolate factory (less the chocolate factory)?
It was super fun to just walk around and window shop. Let me know what you think if you go to Hotel Droog, and especially if you stay in there one room! So curious as to what it looks like (I guess I could search the web and find out though…). Comment below!
