Interactive Play: Experiencing W Amsterdam’s Suites by Following Mr. X
On October 6, 2016, I was invited to the unveiling of W Amsterdam’s completed hotel in a former bank. This was no ordinary tour though. It was an interactive play where we followed the main character from room to room trying to figure out what he was up to. However, the interactive part started much earlier than October 6.
A week before the event, this bellboy rang my apartment door and hand delivered me my invitation to the tour along with a very decadent chocolate cigar! This made me quite excited about the tour and what was to come ahead, but I was slightly embarrassed because I was still in my pajamas and wearing my night guard. The embarrassment passed quickly when I took a bite of that chocolate– mmm!
On the day of the tour, I arrived at 4:00PM sharp as the invitation said. I received a goody bag with a record and this high-end face mask among a couple of other things and enjoyed some treats. While all the guests filtered into the Extreme Wow Suite, I explored this 112 meter squared room. I loved everything about it from the furniture down to the small details like this panel that controlled the curtains and lights. The most wowing part about it was the bathtub! I love taking baths so could imagine myself in that giant tub with a glass of champagne staring out the window into Amsterdam.
After all the guests came in, we sat down and received instructions from a quirky man onscreen who told us we must keep anything we see and hear a secret. We even had to sign contracts with an old-fashioned ink pen! After signing our lives away, we each received a mysterious key.
The bellboys ushered us out of the room to discover the commotion stirred up by a hotel guest and discovered Mr. X in the front of the Bank building. He quickly escaped from us.
We used our keys to discover little treasures inside these bank lockers, which are original fixtures from when this building was a bank. In one of the lockers was a ringing cell phone. When we picked up, a women gave us clues on where to go to find Mr. X.
The play took us into the WOW Suite Bank where we met his wife and the Marvelous Suite* where we met the mistress. Over time, we found out that Mr. X was having an affair with this evil woman who only wanted him for his suitcase.
*This €1,900 suite really is marvelous. It’s laid out over two stories and has a pool table.
At the end, we find out that Mr. X’s suitcase was simply full of paper clips! Because of this, the mistress who wanted Mr. X because of his riches kills Mr. X’s wife, Mr. X, and then herself. #tragic
My favorite part about this whole tour, besides the actors and actresses incredible talent to stay in character despite all of us being around, was this synchronized swimming performance and live DJ set in the pool!
Opening Party at W Hotel
After the tour, the W Hotel had a glitzy party with live music, a DJ, more chocolate cigars (mmm), vodka and gin bars, and burgers by the Butcher. They even provided bathing suits for free if you wanted to go swimming in their pool. So fancy and fun!
How awesome are these suites and the way W Amsterdam presented them? Can you picture yourself staying here?
I can! I wish!
Thanks for stopping by! xo.
